Why was the data set created?

The purpose is to disseminate a digital version of a regional map showing the distribution of sub-bottom seismic profiles (boomer) collected in Fishers Island Sound and eastern Long Island Sound aboard the R/V ASTERIAS during 1990. The seismic data collected along these ship tracks can be used to provide useful information about the framework geology in this region.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

ASTERIAS 90-1 navigation data files (source 1 of 1)
Lewis, Ralph S. , Unknown, Unpublished data from ASTERIAS 90-1 geophysical cruise:.

This is part of the following larger work.

Lewis, Ralph S. , and DiGiacomo-Cohen, Mary, 2000, A review of the Geological Framework of the Long Island Sound basin, with some observations relating to postglacial sedimentation: Journal of Coastal Research vol. 16, no. 3, Coastal Education and Research Foundation, Fort Lauderdale, FL.

    Type_of_Source_Media:
High-resolution seismic-reflection boomer lines navigated with Loran C
    Source_Contribution:
High-resolution seismic-reflection data were collected during field work conducted in Fishers Island Sound and eastern Long Island Sound during 1990. This data set is the navigation from that cruise.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 1990 (process 1 of 4)
Ten second navigation data was converted to an Info table and one record for every minute was selected from the set. These records were generated into an Arc coverage using the Lat/Long coordinates (provided by the LORAN C navigation system). The coverage was projected to CT state plane coordinates and compared to digital base maps. The entire set of points was moved (as a group) using ArcEdit to reflect the local variation in LORAN. Attributes were added.

    Date: 2001 (process 2 of 4)
The navigation coverage was projected to Latitude/Longitude using Arc/Info. Decimal degree coordinates were ungenerated and joined to the attribute table as PLAT and PLON. The lat/lon coords from the original navigation system were deleted since they did not reflect the plotted position of the navigation points. A shapefile was generated using ArcView.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

All attribute data were recorded by the chief scientist or the onboard computer navigation system, it has been entered, processed and checked by the compilers in a consistent manner.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

All navigation was done by Loran C. Typical Loran. Accuracy for LIS is about 100 m.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

Complete information is provided for all navigation points in the data set. Navigation points are spaced at 1 minute intervals (approx) and at course changes or line events (start/end). Continuous navigation is not provided.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

No additional checks for topological consistency were performed on this data set.
