Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): Rafael W. Rodriguez

Affiliate Investigator(s):

Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Seismics: Sparker, Sampling: Geology, Location-Elevation: Navigation

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Collect high-resolution seismic profiles at the river mouths of the Rio Grande de Arecibo and Rio Cibuco to help determine vibracoring sites for the heavy minerals study. Collect seismic profiles from Rio Bayamon to Rio Loiza nearshore areas to help identify sand deposits to be used as borrow sites for beach nourishment projects in the Metropolitan area.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: San Juan, Puerto Rico

End Port/Location: San Juan, Puerto Rico

Start Date: 1985-06-05

End Date: 1985-07-10

Equipment Used: Sparker , Alpine Vibracorer, Raytheon radar, Motorola Mini-Ranger III

Information to be Derived: Grain size analysis; Sea floor map;

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: High-resolution seismic profiles were obtained at the river mouths of the Rio Grande de Arecibo and Rio Cibuco. These profiles will help determine vibracoring sites for the heavy minerals study. The seismic profiles from Rio Bayamon to Rio Loiza nearshore areas will help us identify sand deposits to be used as borrow sites for beach nourishment projects in the Metropolitan area.
