Area of Operations: Boston Harbor, Massachusetts Bay, Massachusetts, United States, North America, North Atlantic
Dates: January 20, 1987 to January 22, 1987
Chief scientist: Brad Butman
Objectives: Conduct detailed sidescan survey around 3 sites to aid in location of bottom tripod system.
Type of Activity: Sidescan survey;Sidescan survey
Information to be derived: Sidescan data
Summary: About 57 km of sidescan data were collected which indicated an extremely patchy sediment surface, presumably associated with the glacial origin of the region. A second day of sidescan and grab sampling had been planned to further define the sediment texture, but was cancelled because of an impending major winter storm. ASTERIAS returned to Woods Hole immediately following the survey. REMOTES and ROV surveys and existing sediment data will be used to select the tripod sites. Additional sediment samples will be collected when instruments are deployed.
