Area of Operations: Massachusetts Bay, Massachusetts, United States, North America, North Atlantic
Dates: April 02, 1989 to April 11, 1989
Chief scientist: Mike Bothner
Objectives: The primary objective for this cruise is to acquire the first complete sidescan sonar coverage of an 81 square kilometer area that includes the proposed outfall site. Other objectives were to collect high-resolution seismic reflection and bathymetric data throughout the survey area and to collect sediment samples and take photographs and video of the sea floor at specific targets, identified using the sidescan results.
Type of Activity: Sampling; Photography; Sidescan sonar;Sidescan sonar
Information to be derived: Samples and chemical analysis; Suspended sediment concentrations; Morphology;
Summary: Sidescan sonar coverage: 67 square kilometers. The sidescan-sonar records were of excellent quality over most of the study area.
