Other ID: MH39-02

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): Michael Bothner

Affiliate Investigator(s): William Martin - WHOI

Information Specialist(s): Michael Casso, Frances Lightsom

Data Type(s): Imagery: Photo, Location-Elevation: Navigation, Sampling: Geology, Time Series: Mooring (physical oceanography)

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Exchange moorings at the LNB site and off Scituate. Collect sediment samples and oxygen profiles at our long-term monitoring stations.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: USCG Base, Boston, MA

End Port/Location: USCG Base, Boston, MA

Start Date: 2002-05-21

End Date: 2002-05-22

Equipment Used: Camera- deep sea, Digital camera, DGPS, Slow corer, Bottom platform

Information to be Derived: Time series data; Samples and chemical analysis; Grain size analysis; Suspended sediment concentrations;

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Moorings deployed: 4 (#689, 690, 691 and 692, all recovered FA 02046 MARCUS HANNA Oct. 22-25, 2002). Moorings recovered: 5 (#682, 683, 684, 685 and 686, all deployed FA 02026 MARCUS HANNA Feb. 5-6, 2002). 8 cores collected at Station 3; 2 cores collected at Station 2; 2 water samples recovered; 13 tube traps recovered/deployed. Recovered Anderson trap sample at LNB location - a good one; redeployed same at LNB location. Honjo traps recovered at LNB and Scituate - both worked; redeployed Honjo traps at same sites. WHOI scientists deployed/recovered oxygen profiler 2x at each USGS station (2 and 3). WHOI scientists deployed 2 SQUIRTS instruments (porewater sampling devices) near USGS Station 3 to be recovered 1 week later.

Staff: P. Soupy Alexander, Dann Blackwood, Jonathan Borden, Michael Bothner, Michael Casso, Sarah Fuller, Joseph S. Newell, Richard Rendigs, John Warner, Flavia Wood

Affiliate Staff:
William Martin and Joanne Goudreau (WHOI) for work with benthic chambers and oxygen profilers; Mike Mickelson (MWRA) to assist with moorings

Notes: If the large tripod fails to come up, we will request an extra day of ship time to dive on the instrument. Problems (again) with the HDC core closure device (cheese slicer) - especially evident on Station 2. Original Center People field contained: Patricia Soupy Alexander, Dann Blackwood*, Jonathan Borden*, Mike Bothner, Michael Casso, Sarah Fuller*, Richard Rendigs, John Warner*, and Flavia Wood for at-sea operations; Joseph Newell* for transport of gear. Asterisk (*) denotes acct. 67013; otherwise acct. 67011.
