Other ID: NURC 2004-10A

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): Kathryn Scanlon Catanach

Affiliate Investigator(s): Felicia Coleman (FSU) and Christopher Koenig (FSU)

Information Specialist(s): Julia Knisel

Data Type(s): Imagery: Photo, Imagery: Video, Location-Elevation: Navigation

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Geologic sampling and imaging of grouper habitats and paleoshoreline features using ROV.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Panama City, FL

End Port/Location: Panama City, FL

Start Date: 2004-06-02

End Date: 2004-06-06

Equipment Used: ROV, GPS (wh)

Information to be Derived: Samples and chemical analysis; Habitat maps;

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: ROV dive sites 1, 2, 3 and 4 were in or near the Madison Swanson Fishery Reserve. Video and photo data were collected. Geologic sampling was attempted with the ROV manipulator, but no rock samples were obtained. Some biological material was recovered and discarded. ROV dive sites 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 were in the Steamboat Lumps Fishery Reserve. Rock samples were recovered from Dive 5 (1 rock), Dive 6 (2 rocks), Dive 7 (1 rock), and Dive 8 (1 rock). Dive 9 was aborted with no samples collected due to thruster malfunction on the ROV. Cruise was aborted 2 days early with plans to make up lost time on cruise in March 2005.

Notes: Original plan had been to use mixed-gas divers for sampling, but this was not done because divers were not available for this time. Plans are being made to use divers in 2005. Original Center People field contained: Kathy Scanlon, co-chief scientist; Julie Knisel, GIS and data archive; Nariscia Philip, deckhand.
