Summary Information for Field Activity 2010-003-FA

Area of Operations: Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, United States, North America, North Atlantic

Dates: September 09, 2010 to September 17, 2010

Chief scientist: Dave Twichell

Objectives: Sea floor mapping of coastal areas along the Elizabeth Islands.

Type of Activity: Sea floor mapping;

Information to be derived: Bathymetric maps

Summary: The nearshore areas along both the Vineyard Sound and Buzzards Bay sides of the Elizabeth Islands extending from Quicks Hole to the western end of Sow and Pigs Reef were surveyed using swath bathymetric, sidescan sonar, and seismic reflection techniques. Equipment problems and weather limited the survey to six days. The data were all of high quality, although sub-bottom penetration on the seismic data was limited for much of the area because of extensive fields of boulders.
