Area of Operations: Gas Hydrate Laboratory, U.S. Geological Survey, Woods Hole Science Center, 384 Woods Hole Road, Woods Hole, MA 02543
Dates: August 10, 2010 to April 08, 2011
Chief scientist: Bill Waite
Objectives: Establish a means of calibrating wave speed measurements made in hydrate-bearing sand by the primary institutions conducting physical property measurements in hydrate-bearing sediment.
Type of Activity:
Information to be derived: Physical property data;
Summary: This activity is part of an Interlaboratory Comparison Project designed to compare wave speed measurements made in different laboratories, but on identical samples. Data include waveforms measured with shear-wave transducers on dry sand, water-damp sand, fully water-saturated sand, frozen sand, and hydrate-bearing sand. Results are combined with those from 7 other laboratories in an excel spreadsheet and analyzed in a paper presented at the 7th International Conference on Gas Hydrates (July 17-21, 2011, Edinburgh, Scotland).
