On February 14, 2003, Bronze Medalist John Carlos visited with us and gave a talk about his life and experience in the 1968 Olympics. The annual Harambee took place on February 27. Activities at the Harambee included live music by Jack Leyden, Tony Bailey and Erica Lewis, storytelling by Vird Williams and a display by local poet, writer and artist Vasco Pires.

In addition, George Spivey, Equity/Affirmative Action Officer for the Town of Falmouth, gave a talk entitled "The Souls of Black Folk: Poetry and Song, from the 1700s to the Present." On February 27, Ambrose Jearld, Jr. moderated a roundtable discussion in honor of the 25th anniversary of Black History Month celebrations in Woods Hole.

Woods Hole Black History Month events are sponsored by the Marine Biological Laboratory; the Woods Hole Oceanographic Insitution, the National Marine Fisheries Service, the U.S. Coast Guard Group Woods Hole and the U.S. Geological Survey, Woods Hole Field Center. All events are free and open to the public.
