Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center > U.S. Geological Survey East-Coast Sediment Texture Database > Data Catalog
The analyzed sediment sample data are provided with geographic coordinates to allow the data to be integrated into a Geographic Information System (GIS). The data are available in shapefile format created with ArcGIS version 9.3.1 and can be viewed in any GIS software capable of reading that format. In addition to the Esri shapefile, the surficial sediment data layers are available in an ASCII text format and Microsoft Excel spreadsheet format to allow users who may not have access to GIS software to have access to the source data in an alternate way to view and examine the datasets.
The data are cataloged below for easy access. The shapefile name is linked to a browse graphic showing the extent and coverage of the data. Selecting the data layer name (i.e., ecstdb2014) will result in the browse graphic being displayed in a separate browser window.
Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) metadata for the database is provided in three versions (HTML, FAQ, text). Selecting associated metadata files from the table below will open the information in a new browser window. An "Extensible Markup Language" (XML) version of the metadata are also available in the individual data directories. This version of the metadata is made available for use with Esri's ArcCatalog software.
A 'zip' compressed, downloadable archive file contains the elements comprising the Esri shapefile, FGDC metadata, and ASCII text and Excel versions of the data. The first record of the ASCII file and Excel spreadsheet contains the name of the data fields. A link to the Data Dictionary is also provided. The compressed downloadable file was created using the Windows program WINZIP v14.5.
