Sidescan sonar imagery, bathymetry, and sediment sample data outline sediment distribution and sedimentary environments in Narragansett Bay. Low-energy environments are composed of fine-grained sediments located in moderate to deep water where bathymetry is smooth. Deposition occurs in these areas to the northeast and northwest of Conanicut Island, east of Plum Point, and in the East Passage trough along the southern boundary of the study area. The bottom in areas that transition between high- and low-energy environments is composed of fine sands and sand silt clay and tends to have variable bathymetry. Sorting and reworking processes occur in these areas between erosional and depositional areas. Floors of high-energy environments are composed of coarse-grained sediments and are located in shallow water depths and along parts of the troughs. Erosion and nondeposition are occurring in these areas throughout the study area. Pockmarks are present in the study area; although the cause of similar depressions in coarse-grained sediments is unknown.
