The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (MA CZM), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Imagery, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provides a fundamental framework for research and management activities along this part of the Massachusetts coastline, shows the composition and terrain of the seabed, and provides information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. Interpretive data layers were derived from multibeam echo-sounder and sidescan-sonar data collected in the vicinity of Woods Hole, a passage through the Elizabeth Islands, off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. In November 2007, bottom photographs, high-resolution seismic-reflection data, and Surficial sediment data were acquired as part of a ground-truth reconnaissance survey.
This data set includes seismic-reflection data in seg-y and jpeg formats collected along 11 lines in the vicinity of Woods Hole, offshore Massachusetts. The seismic data were collected during USGS survey 07034, conducted November 14-19, 2007. This data set was acquired to ground-truth acoustic data collected during NOAA hydrographic survey H11077.

All attributes were checked in a consistent manner.
No additional checks for consistency were performed on this data.
All available data along seismic acquisition lines collected during the RV Rafael cruise 07034 is included in this data set.
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Navigation was by GPS; positional accuracy to less than 30 m.
The Chirp 512i was towed astern of the RV Rafael on the water surface. A Garmin GPS receiver was mounted on the center of the tow vehicle. GPS data were transmitted to the RV Rafael and input to data acquisition system.
The vertical position was local sea level and there has been no corrections to a datum or for tidal variations.
High-resolution seismic-reflection data were collected during November 2007 aboard the Research Vessel Rafael. The seismic data were acquired digitally along 11 lines totaling approximately 12.6 km with an Edgetech SB-512i Chirp sub-bottom profiler (500 Hz - 12 kHz swept FM) at a 0.25-s fire rate, a 50-ms pulse length, and a 0.5 to 4.5 kHz sweep (swept frequency). These data were logged in the Edgetech raw format (JSF) using Edgetech Jstar acquisition software.

The Edgetech format (JSF) Chirp 512i data were converted to standard SEG-Y rev.1 format files using a C program written by Tom O'Brien (USGS, Woods Hole, MA). The parameters were set to extract and write the envelope trace data only.

A script was run that used Seismic Unix to read the SEG-Y files and plot the data as 8-bit gray scale Postscript files using the Seismic Unix 'psimage' algorithm at a scale of 4.16 ms per inch and 100 traces per inch.

Each profile is available as a binary file in Society of Exploration Geophysicists SEG-Y rev 1 format. A SEG-Y file consists of 1) a 3200-byte file identification record of EBCDIC encoded general information; 2) a 400-byte binary record with information such as sample rate and record length specific to the data set; and 3) multiple records, one seismic reflection trace per record. Each trace record is preceded by a 240-byte "trace header" containing information such as trace number and acquisition day and time specific to each trace. The trace data are represented as a time series of unitless 32-bit ieee real numbers proportional to the reflection coefficient. The SEG-Y file is useful only if you have access to specialized software designed to process and display seismic reflection data.
