Description:
Abstract:
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is working cooperatively with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to interpret the surficial geology in estuaries along the coast of the northeastern United States. The purpose of our present study is to define the sea floor morphology and sedimentary environments in an area of western Rhode Island Sound using sidescan-sonar imagery and bathymetry data collected aboard the NOAA Ship RUDE, as well as historic seismic records. The mosaic, bathymetry, and their interpretations serve many purposes, including: (1) defining the geological variability of the sea floor, which is one of the primary controls of benthic habitat diversity; (2) improving our understanding of the processes that control the distribution and transport of bottom sediments and the distribution of benthic habitats and associated infaunal community structures; and (3) providing a detailed framework for future research, monitoring, and management activities. The sidescan-sonar mosaics and bathymetry images also serve as base maps for subsequent sedimentological, geochemical, and biological observations, because precise information on environmental setting is important for selection of sampling sites and for accurate interpretations of point measurements.
Purpose:
To release the ASCII text file of the single-beam and multibeam bathymetry (primarily single-beam) generated from NOAA survey H11322 in the western part of Rhode Island Sound. This partial coverage data was gridded to 1-m where data exists.

Original single-beam and shallow-water multibeam bathymetry data (primarily single-beam).
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The multibeam data for this survey were acquired in XTF (extended Triton data format) and recorded digitally through an ISIS data acquisition system. An Odom Echotrac DF3200 MKII dual-beam echo sounder operating at 24 and 200 kHz acquired the sounding data. In a few areas of interest, shallow-water multibeam echo-sounder data were acquired with a Reson SeaBat 8125 operating at 455 kHz. Once digitally recorded, the XTF data were processed using CARIS HIPS/SIPS software to quality control the data and to incorporate sound velocity and tidal corrections. Data were gridded to 1m where collected. Because the data are primarily single-beam bathymetry, gaps exist between tracklines. Vertical datum is mean lower low water, X and Y units are meters, UTM zone 19, NAD83. Data are recorded with 6 columns in the order: Easting, Northing, Depth, Density, Shoal, and Deep. Depth is the value assigned to the grid node based on all the sounding data affecting the node and the weighing scheme. Density is the number of depth measurements affecting the node. Shoal is the shallowest depth measurement affecting the node. Deep is the deepest measurement affecting the node.
