Knowledge Management for Coastal and Marine Geology

A workshop sponsored by the Knowledge Management Project of the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program, to be held in St. Petersburg, Florida on March 8-10, 2005.

The mission of the Knowledge Management Project is to organize and preserve the scientific knowledge assets of the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program, and to make them available and useful to scientists and to the concerned public. We work nationally, bringing together staff from USGS offices in Menlo Park and Santa Cruz CA, Woods Hole MA, St. Petersburg FL, and Reston VA. We work in the context of national and international programs and standards for scientific knowledge management.

This workshop is an opportunity to exchange ideas and develop working relationships, and also to plan and set priorities for the Knowledge Management Project.

Highlights of the agenda:

• Presentations of existing online knowledge services including the USGS Monterey Bay Science website, the GeoMapApp Marine Geoscience Data Management System, the Louisiana GeoDatabase, and the Regional Association for Research in the Gulf of Maine.
• Work sessions on the new USGS Coastal Change Hazards knowledge bank website.
• Prioritization of data rescue efforts for USGS Coastal and Marine Geology data.
• The workshop will be held at the University of South Florida, adjacent to the USGS Center for Coastal and Watershed Studies.
• Discussion of future directions for the USGS Coastal and Marine Knowledge Bank.
• Field trip to a beach to see coastal change in action.
