Why was the data set created?

The purpose is to disseminate a digital version of a regional map showing the distribution of sub-bottom seismic profiles (boomer) collected in eastern Long Island Sound aboard the R/V ASTERIAS during 1982. The seismic data collected along these ship tracks can be used to provide useful information about the framework geology in this region.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

ASTERIAS 82-3 navigation logs (source 1 of 1)
Lewis, Ralph, and Needell, Sally, 19870000, Maps showing the stratigraphic framework and Quaternary geologic history of eastern Long Island Sound: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map MF-1939-A, U.S. Geological Survey, Woods Hole Field Center.

    Type_of_Source_Media:
High-resolution seismic-reflection boomer lines navigated with Loran C
    Source_Scale_Denominator: 80,000
    Source_Contribution:
High-resolution seismic-reflection data were collected during field work conducted in eastern Long Island Sound during 1982. This data set is the navigation from that cruise.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 1990 (process 1 of 4)
Selected navigation points from the original onboard logs were hand plotted on charts with Loran overlays. These overlays were then registered and digitized (using a Calcomp 9100 table and PC Arc/Info) to create point coverages with CT state plane coordinates. Ungenerated point coordinates were used to generate a line coverage. Lines were edited where necessary (split at start/end) and attributes were added.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

All attribute data were recorded by the chief scientist and entered and checked by the compilers in a consistent manner.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

A navigation was done by Loran C. accuracy for LIS is about 100 m.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

Complete information is provided for all navigation lines in the data set; lines are generated from navigation points spaced at 5 minute intervals (approx) and at course changes or line events (start/end). Continuous navigation is not available.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

No additional checks for topological consistency were performed on this data set.
