Why was the data set created?

The purpose is to disseminate a digital version of a regional map showing the distribution of sub-bottom seismic profiles (boomer) collected in western Long Island Sound aboard the R/V ASTERIAS during 1985. The seismic data collected along these ship tracks can be used to provide useful information about the framework geology in this region.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

ASTERIAS 85-8 navigation logs (source 1 of 1)
    Lewis(comp.), Ralph S. , and Neff(comp.), Nancy F. , unknown, Unpublished data from ASTERIAS 85-8 geophysical cruise:.

This is part of the following larger work.

Lewis, Ralph S. , and DiGiacomo-Cohen, Mary, 2000, A review of the Geological Framework of the Long Island Sound basin, with some observations relating to postglacial sedimentation: Journal of Coastal Research vol. 16, no. 3, Coastal Education and Research Foundation, Fort Lauderdale, FL.

    Type_of_Source_Media:
High-resolution seismic-reflection boomer lines navigated with Loran C
    Source_Scale_Denominator: 80,000
    Source_Contribution:
High-resolution seismic-reflection data were collected during field work conducted in western Long Island Sound during 1985. This data set is the navigation from that cruise.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 1990 (process 1 of 4)
Selected navigation points from the original onboard logs were hand plotted on charts with Loran overlays. These overlays were then registered and digitized (using a Calcomp 9100 table and PC Arc/Info) to create point coverages with CT state plane coordinates. Ungenerated point coordinates were used to generate a line coverage. Lines were edited where necessary (split at start/end) and attributes were added.

Navigation shape files were modified to remove the Arc/Info specific attributes and add the attribute field IMAGE. This field is used to store the relative path to the browse image of the associated seismic record for the line segment.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

All attribute data were recorded by the chief scientist and entered and checked by the compilers in a consistent manner.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

All navigation was done by Loran C. Typical Loran accuracy for LIS is about 100 m.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

Complete information is provided for all navigation lines in the data set; lines are generated from navigation points spaced at 5 minute intervals (approx) and at course changes or line events (start/end). Continous navigation is not available.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

No additional checks for topological consistency were performed on this data set.

How can someone get a copy of the data set?
