Why was the data set created?

The purpose is to disseminate a digital version of a regional map showing the distribution of sub-bottom seismic profiles (boomer) collected in Fishers Island Sound and eastern Long Island Sound aboard the R/V ASTERIAS during 1990. The seismic data collected along these ship tracks can be used to provide useful information about the framework geology in this region.

    High-resolution seismic-reflection data were collected during field work conducted in Fishers Island Sound and eastern Long Island Sound during 1990. This data set is the navigation from that cruise.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 1990 (process 1 of 4)
    Ten second navigation data was converted to an Info table and one record for every minute was selected from the set. These records were generated into an Arc coverage using the Lat/Long coordinates (provided by the LORAN C navigation system). The coverage was projected to CT state plane coordinates and compared to digital base maps. The entire set of points was moved (as a group) using ArcEdit to reflect the local variation in LORAN. Ungenerated point coordinates were used to generate a line coverage. Lines were edited where necessary (split at start/end) and attributes were added.

    All attribute data were recorded by the chief scientist or the onboard computer navigation sysytem, it has been entered, processed and checked by the compilers in a consistent manner.

    Complete information is provided for all navigation lines in the data set. Navigation points are spaced at 1 minute intervals (approx) and at course changes or line events (start/end). Continous navigation is not provided.
