Great South Bay

Great South Bay is a shallow, long, and narrow bay on the south shore of Long Island (NY). It is separated and protected from the North Atlantic by Fire Island. The main connection between the bay and the ocean is Fire Island Inlet, but there are smaller openings, including a new inlet formed during Hurricane Sandy. The USGS is investigating the water-level response of the Bay to offshore tidal oscillations and storms.
