GIS:

Two Environmental System Research Institute (ESRI) ArcView 3.3 Geographic Information System (GIS) project files reside in the top-level directory of this DVD. The project file allpulley.apr does not require any extensions that are not standard to ArcView3X. The project file allpulley_sa.apr contains grids requiring the Spatial Analyst Extension. All associated GIS files are contained in subdirectories under the data directory. The user must have a copy of ESRI ArcView 3.2 or later in order to view the project files. Visit the ESRI Web site (http://www.esri.com) for information concerning this and other software.

These project files (allpulley.apr and allupulley_sa.apr) require the directory structure used on this DVD-ROM, and contain a startup script which prompts the user for the drive letter of the DVD-ROM drive. This information is needed in order to establish "hotlinks" found within the project files. If the ArcView project file and the data directory are copied to the hard disk (maintaining the original directory hierarchy), then the location entered for the startup script should refer to the directory location of the ArcView project file. If for some reason the directory location is entered incorrectly, then the user can click on the pink button with the yellow CD (CD icon) to reenter the information.

For those users who do not have ArcView 3.2 or later, the individual GIS data files can still be viewed with a compatible GIS viewer, or a free GIS viewer such as ArcExplorer. This GIS data viewer is available from ESRI (http://www.esri.com). Please note that the ArcExplorer software is limited to the Microsoft Windows operating systems and some UNIX operating systems.

Extensions:
The project files are setup to "hotlink" to the JPEG bottom photographs and seismic-reflection profiles. The JPEG (JFIF) Image Support extension must be loaded for this to work. This extension will be loaded by default within the project file.

The allpulley_sa.apr utilizes gridded data sets. As such, the Spatial Analyst extension must be loaded in order to view and manipulate these grids. This extension is loaded by default within the allpulley_sa.apr. For users who do not have the Spatial Analyst extension, allpulley.apr utilizes TIFF images of the grid data sets. The necessary extensions will be loaded by default within the project file.

Projection:
All of the shapefiles are in the Geographic NAD83 coordinate system. The project file (allpulley.apr) contains images of the bathymetry data, and these TIFF images are in the UTM, Zone 17, NAD 83 projection, with those views projected accordingly. The grid data sets that appear in allpulley_sa.apr are in the UTM, Zone 17, NAD 83 projection, with those views projected accordingly.

Hotlinking:
Each point within the point shapefile indicating image locations presented within the project file is "hotlinked" to a JPEG image of a bottom photograph from that location. Similarly, each seismic-reflection trackline is "hotlinked" to a JPEG image of the corresponding seismic-reflection profile. To view these images, make the appropriate theme the active theme. This should activate the hotlink tool (hotlink icon) within the project tool bar. Click on this button and then on an individual record within the theme. The corresponding JPEG image will be opened in a separate view window so the user can pan and zoom on the image.
