Description:
Abstract:
In order to test hypotheses about groundwater flow under and into estuaries and the Atlantic Ocean, geophysical surveys, geophysical probing, submarine groundwater sampling, and sediment coring were conducted by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists at Cape Cod National Seashore (CCNS) from 2004 through 2006. Coastal resource managers at CCNS and elsewhere are concerned about nutrients that are entering coastal waters via submarine groundwater discharge, which are contributing to eutrophication and harmful algal blooms. The research carried out as part of the study described here was designed, in part, to help refine assumptions required by earlier versions of models about the nature of submarine groundwater flow and discharge at CCNS. This study was conducted in four phases, with a variety of field techniques and equipment employed in each phase. Phase 1 consisted of continuous resistivity profiling (CRP) surveys of the entire study area conducted in 2004. Phase 2 consisted of CRP ground-truthing via resistivity probe measurements and submarine groundwater sampling from hydraulically-drive piezometers using a barge in the Salt Pond/Nauset Marsh area in 2005. Phase 3 consisted of supplemental detailed CRP surveys in the Salt Pond/Nauset Marsh area in 2006. Finally, Phase 4 consisted of sediment coring and porewater extraction in the Salt Pond/Nauset Marsh area later in 2006 to supplement the 2005 sampling.
Purpose:
To supply the Geoprobe measurement results in a single Excel spreadsheet that includes the summary information, as well as the individual probe measurement results on individual worksheet pages within the spreadsheet.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
This Excel spreadsheet contains 6 individual worksheets. The first worksheet is a summary of the electrical conductance data acquired. This table has 10 columns that can be thought of as column pairs. The first column header indicates the sample number (i.e. SP2005-1) and the Depth Below Sediment Surface in meters. The second column is the same sample (i.e. SP2005-1) and shows the electrical conductance in milli-Siemens per meter - with a value at each depth indicated in column 1. The 3rd and 4th columns are the depth and electrical conductance values (respectively) for sample SP2005-2. The 5th and 6th columns are the data for SP2005-4, while the 7th and 8th columns are for sample location SP2005-5. In addition to this summary worksheet, 5 more worksheets are present in the Excel file. The remaining worksheets are more detailed information for each sample location. The upper portion of the worksheet gives some basic information in terms of crew, weather, date etc. The columns of information following this header information are a table containing 8 columns. Location ID represents the sample location (i.e. SP2005-1) combined with the sample depth in feet (i.e. surf is surface water; 00.0 is sediment water interface). Time is the sample time. Water Depth (ft) is the water depth in feet at the sample location. Surface conductance is the water conductance measured in milli-Siemens per meter. Sediment/Drive Description gives a qualitative description of the medium the probe is being inserted into. This can be either a sediment description, or how hard it was to advance the probe. Depth Below Bottom (ft) is the depth below the sediment water interface measured in feet. A negative value indicates a measurement taken above the sediment water interface. EC (mS/m) is the electrical conductance, measured in milli-Siemens per meter, at that sample location. The Notes column represents any additional information noted by the scientist in the field.
