Abstract:
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (MA CZM), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Imagery, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provide a fundamental framework for research and management activities along this part of the Massachusetts coastline, show the composition and terrain of the seabed, and provide information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. Interpretive data layers were derived from multibeam echo-sounder and sidescan sonar data collected in Great Round Shoal Channel, a passage through the shoals at the eastern entrance to Nantucket Sound, off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. In June 2006, bottom photographs and surficial sediment data were acquired as part of a ground-truth reconaissance survey.

    Source_Contribution:
    The original multibeam bathymetric data acquired with Reson 8101 and 8125 echosounder systems during NOAA cruise H11079 aboard the NOAA ship Thomas Jefferson were processed and exported as a hill-shaded color-encoded GeoTIFF (.tif) image in UTM Zone 19.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 2004 (process 1 of 2)
    The multibeam data was acquired in XTF (extended Triton data format), recorded digitally through an ISIS data acquisition system, and processed using CARIS HIPS (Hydrographic Image Processing System) software for quality control, to incorporate sound velocity and tidal corrections, and to produce a base surface at 3-m resolution. The base surface was hill shaded (sun illuminated) with the sun at an azimuth of 315, an altitude angle above the horizon of 45, a vertical exaggeration of 5x , and color encoded by depth with a continous color pallete in CARIS HIPS. The data were then exported in GeoTIFF (.tif) format in UTM Zone 19.
