Time-series PlotsTime-series plots of selected data from the Massachusetts Bay Internal Wave Experiment are presented to provide an overview of the observations. Plots were generated using either 1-minute data which show the internal wave fluctuations, hour-averaged data, which show fluctuations with periods of hours, or low-pass filtered data, which show fluctuations with periods of a few days. The time-series plots of the entire data record show the overall depression of the thermocline but do not resolve the high-frequency fluctuations associated with the internal wave packets. The expanded plots of the time period of August 20-24 and August 22 show the typical high-frequency fluctuations associated with the internal wave packets. The following links are to PDF images. Hour-averaged mean significant wave height, hour-averaged wind speed, and low-passed filtered wind stress from NOAA Buoy 44013 for the period of this experiment.
Hour-averaged bottom pressure at sites B and C (mean removed).
Pressure difference between high and low water (Ebb) and between low and high water (flood) determined from bottom pressure at Site B.
Low-passed bottom pressure at LT-A, Site B and Site C (mean removed) and low-passed wind stress at NOAA Buoy.
Low-passed current at Site B at 20 (FSI), 50 (VMCM), 75 m (VMCM), and 1 mab (BASS) and low-passed wind stress at NOAA Buoy.
Low-passed current at Site B at 11, 31, 51, 71 and 77 m (corrected ADCP data).
Low-passed current at Site C at 20 (corrected ADCP data) and 45 (VMCM) m and low-passed wind stress at NOAA Buoy.
Low-passed current at Site C at 11, 21, 31, and 41 m (corrected ADCP data).
Low-passed current at 20 m at LT-A (VMCM), LT-B (ADCP), Site B (FSI horizontal mooring), and Site C (corrected ADCP data), and low-passed wind stress at NOAA Buoy.
Near-bottom low-passed current at LT-A at 1 mab (BASS), Site B at 1 mab (BASS), and Site C at 6 mab (VMCM), and low-passed wind stress at NOAA Buoy.
Contour plots of temperature from each site for the period of this experiment (hour-averaged data), the period of August 19 through August 24 (interpolated to 5 minute data), and the period of August 22 (interpolated to 1 minute data). Site A plots contoured from temperature observations at 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 m on the surface mooring. Site B plots contoured from temperature observations at 0, 10, 20, and 30 m (on the surface mooring), 45 and 70 m (on the subsurface mooring) and 84 m (on the bottom tripod). Site C plots contoured from observations obtained at 10 m (on surface mooring), and at 21, 31, 41 and 45 m (on the subsurface mooring).
Beam attenuation, temperature, and current speed for the entire data record (hour-averaged data) and for the periods of August 19 through August 24 and August 22 (original sampling interval, ~60 seconds).
Contour plots of corrected ADCP current from sites B and C for the period of this experiment (hour-averaged data), the period of August 19 through August 24 (5 minute averaged data), and the period of August 22 (1 minute data). The two upper-most 2-m bins have been deleted in this display.
Contour plots of ADCP echo intensity from sites B and C for the period of this experiment (hour-averaged data), the period of August 19 through August 24 (interpolated to 5 minute data), and the period of August 22 (interpolated to 1 minute data).
